5 Daily Tech Stories That Filmmakers (and Film Fans) Must Read: Drone Filmmaking, Video Game Storytelling and More

Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe star in a new thriller for the PlayStation 3, drone filmmaking tips, and more tech news for filmmakers (and film fans).

1. Drone Filmmaking: A few weeks ago, the people at DSLRPros.com loaned Indiewire's Bryce Renninger their Ultimate Cinema Edition Aerial Kit. Renninger took it out a few times and recorded some aerial shots. He's written about his experience and has come up with a beginner's guide to drone filmmaking in 5 steps. Read his tips here. And if you want some inspiration, check out these films which show you what drone filmmaking can look like.

2. Beyond: Two Souls: There's a new thriller starring Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe, but it's not coming to the theaters or to VOD. It's "Beyond: Two Souls" and it's a video game for the PlayStation3. Written and directed by David Cage, the founder of the French studio Quantic Dream, "Beyond: Two Souls" aims to elevate video game storytelling to the level of art (or at least transmedia), but, according to The New York Times review, the "leaden writing" drags it down. "Beyond: Two Souls is a misstep for Mr. Cage and Quantic Dream, but its failings are not the result of the limitations of Mr. Cage's preferred medium. That it is interesting at all hinges on its interactive nature. It would be one of the worst movies you've ever seen, even though Ms. Page and Mr. Dafoe give fine performances," writes Chris Suellentrop in The New York Times. Below you can see the trailer for the game:

3. Defy Media: Digital video production companies Alloy Digital and Break Media, who both produce content for YouTube, will merge into a new entity known as Defy Media, The New York Times reports. They will continue to create programming to appeal to the 12-34 year old demographic so hotly coveted by advertisers.

4. Exit Elena: Vyer Films, the film curation and streaming service focused will distribute "Exit Elena," Nathan Silver's microbudget family drama, beginning today. The film, which will be screening this week at the 2013 Vancouver International Film Festival, previously screened at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Viennale, BAFICI, IndieLisboa, IFFBoston, Cucalorus, and the Woodstock Film Festival, where it won an Honorable Mention. Vyer Films highlights "under-seen" films, including Nicolas Provost's "The Invader," Mariano Llinas's "Extraordinary Stories," and Philippe Grandrieux's "A Lake."

5. Forever Fest: Co-founded by Alamo Drafthouse programmer Sarah Pitre and publicist Brandy Fons, Forever Fest will kick off its inaugural year at Alamo Drafthouse Ritz in Austin, Texas on November 1. Pitre and Fons have launched a Kickstarter campaign to support the event. Read more about Forever Fest here.
