AT&T Upgrades, Apple Skips and Classic TV Digitizes: 5 Daily Tech Stories That Filmmakers (And Fans) Must Read

1. Aereo case continues: Fox Broadcasting might take the Aereo case all the way to the Supreme Court, according to Variety. Along with other broadcasters, Fox had sought an injunction to shut down Aereo, a service which allows consumers to receive free over-the-air TV. The broadcasters claim that Aereo is infringing on their copyright. "The 2nd circuit’s denial of our request for an ‘en banc’ hearing, while disappointing was not unexpected,” Fox said in a statement. ”We will now review our options and determine the appropriate course of action, which include seeking a hearing in the U.S. Supreme Court and proceeding to a full trial on the merits of the case." 2. Apple's New Idea: Apple is developing a television service that allows viewers to skip commercials, according to former "Wall Street Journal" reporter Jessica Lessin. Of course, viewers are already accustomed to DVRs, so, as Lessin points out, it's unclear how Apple's service will differentiate itself. Apple is reportedly in talks with media companies about the service, which would pay companies for the skipped commercials. Apple has long been trying to get a foothold into the TV market. Its Apple TV set top-box, which allows viewers to stream iTunes and video from services such as Netflix and Hulu, hasn't done for TV what Macs did for home computers or iPhones did for cellphones. We're reserving judgement until we have more information.

3. Get a new smartphone: Sick of your old model phone and antsy to upgrade to the latest and greatest? Good news! AT&T will announce today that customers will soon be able to upgrade phones after one year instead of waiting two years, according to "The New York Times." Our thoughts? It's about time!

4. Rescuing Walter Cronkite: "The CBS Evening News" with Walter Cronkite and "Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In" are among classic TV shows being restored as part of an effort to convert old videotapes into digital files at the Packard Campus of the Library of Congress’s National Audio-Visual Conservation Center, according to "The Washington Post." The Library of Congress is hoping eventually to convert all of its 700,000 tapes to a digital format. 

5. Instagram trailers: The first-ever Instagram trailer was introduced yesterday; the world didn't end. In theory, it makes perfect sense that first Instagram trailer would be to promote the new "Jobs" biopic about the late Apple founder Steve Jobs, portrayed by Ashton Kutcher. But a 15-second trailer begs the question: are our attention spans so short that we can no longer sit through full-length trailers?

    I hardly think that 15 second trailers are indicative of our dwindling attention spans, although they might possibly contribute to the further dwindling. Filmmakers and Marketers have just found another niche to advertise their wares; smart.
