2. Apple's New Idea: Apple is developing a television service
that allows viewers to skip commercials, according to former "Wall
Street Journal" reporter Jessica Lessin.
Of course, viewers are already accustomed to DVRs, so, as Lessin points
out, it's unclear how Apple's service will differentiate itself. Apple
is reportedly in talks with media companies about the service, which
would pay companies for the skipped commercials. Apple has long been
trying to get a foothold into the TV market. Its Apple TV set top-box,
which allows viewers to stream iTunes and video from services such as
Netflix and Hulu, hasn't done for TV what Macs did for home computers
or iPhones did for cellphones. We're reserving judgement until we have more information.

Rescuing Walter Cronkite: "The CBS Evening News" with Walter Cronkite and "Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In" are among classic TV shows being restored as part of an effort to convert old videotapes into digital files at the Packard Campus of the Library of Congress’s National Audio-Visual Conservation Center, according to "The Washington Post." The Library of Congress is hoping eventually to convert all of its 700,000 tapes to a digital format.
