55th Oberhausen Fest Looks To Asia

by Peter Knegt (January 14, 2009)

The 55th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, running April 30-May 5, 2009, has announced that it will continue its “admirable tradition of mounting curated programmes” with Unreal Asia, a ten-part film programme of works from South East Asia. The programme intends to question the foundations of the global exchanges of goods and information between Asia and the West. Curators Gridthiya Gaweewong and David Teh from Thailand will present approximately 70 films and videos from countries like Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia or Vietnam, exploring “the side effects, symptoms and traumas of the region’s post-colonial period, closely linked to the question of what ‘realism’ signifies in the West and in Asia and in what ways the differing indices of the Real inform Asian moving image cultures”

In five Profiles, which are dedicated to invidividual artists, Oberhausen will offer a look at both Japanese filmmaker Matsumoto Toshio, and the Sarajevo Documentary School. Additional Profiles are dedicated to Mexican filmmaker Nicolas Echevarria, Russian artists’ duo “Factory of Found Clothes”, who will create a performance for the Oberhausen programme, and actor Herbert Fritsch.

Over six days Oberhausen shows more than 400 short films in competitions, thematic programmes and retrospectives. Almost 1,100 industry visitors from 50 countries took part in 2008.
