7th Art and Dubai's Nomads Land Films to Release "Art of Flight" Internationally
by Brian Brooks
Guerilla documentary "The Art of Flight" by Davin Anders Hutchins has received an international deal, with both Dubai-based Nomads Land Films and 7th Art Releasing planning a release, the companies announced Tuesday night. The documentary, which was shot secretly in Egypt, traces the personal tales of refugees fleeing Sudan's civil war seeking refuge in Egypt.
According to a joint release, the film tells the story of "three people - a refugee from southern Sudan, a human rights activist from northern Sudan and an American journalist in self-imposed exile -- all living in Cairo. Each character is en route to a destination another has fled. For very different reasons, the trio has found themselves struggling to survive in Egypt, which has reluctantly become their temporary home.
"The Art of Flight" features artwork of Sudanese painters living in exile. In addition to works from Sudanese artists and torture victims, the film also features an original soundtrack by Al-Khafiyeen, a musical ensemble of refugees whose members keep changing as people move on to their new destinations. 7th Art Releasing and Nomads Land Films will jointly handle all rights in distributing the film internationally, and North American theatrical dates have yet to be announced.
