A Few Good Lists For Tribeca’s Top Picks

by indieWIRE (April 21, 2006)

Time Out New York magazine, The New York Times and The Village Voice have compiled lists of their tops picks for the Tribeca Film Festival to help moviegoers weed through this year’s extensive offerings. Here are some films that made it on to more than one list: John Malkovich returns in Brian Cook‘s “Colour Me Kubrick” as the conman Alan Conway who successfully passed himself off as the director Stanley Kubrick; Emmanuelle Bercot‘s “Backstage” provides a dose of celebrity culture in a film about the intertwining lives of a suburban teen and her pop star idol; “Brothers Of The Head” by Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe is the bizarre story of conjoined twins turned rock-star sensation in 1975 London; Guy Maddin‘s short film, “My Dad Is 100 Years Old” was made in conjuction with Isabella Rossellini and is a tribute to her father, the Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossellini, who was considered the founder of neorealism; and in Jamie Johnson‘s documentary “The One Percent,” the heir to the Johnson and Johnson fortune presents the lives of the extremely rich and poor, interviewing people like Steve Forbes and victims of Hurricana Katrina. Other noteworthy picks are: Billy Corben‘s “Cocaine Cowboys”; Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady‘s “Jesus Camp”; Todd Robinson‘s “Lonely Hearts”; and Rosie Perez‘s debut documentary, “Yo Soy Boricua, Pa Que Tu Lo Sepas! (I’m Boricua, Just So You Know!). For more information on the films screening, visit the Tribeca Film Festival website. [Tamara Schweitzer]
