Academy Narrows Visual Effects Race To 10; 'Impossible' and 'Flight' Snubbed

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences narrowed the Visual Effects Oscar race to 10 films today, with "Looper," "The Hunger Games," "Men in Black III" and -- most surprisingly -- "The Impossible" and "Flight" all left out of the race.

The chosen films are listed below in alphabetical order:

     “The Amazing Spider-Man”
     “Cloud Atlas”
     “The Dark Knight Rises”
     “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”
     “John Carter”
     “Life of Pi”
     “Marvel’s The Avengers”
     “Prometheus”
     “Skyfall”
     “Snow White and the Huntsman”

Check out Indiewire's revised predictions in the category here.

All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the 10 shortlisted films on Thursday, January 3.  Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration. The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 5:30 a.m. PT.

When a movie blends cgi visual effects with the natural landscape in such a way as to make them seamless, then special recognition should be given. John Carter is one such movie. I have not yet seen the Hobbit and I am sure the effects will be excellent. But I was really impressed with the dying world of Barsoom (Mars) as created by Andrew Stanton and his team.

Many wonderful movies are up for 'Visual Effects.' But the one that stands out most to me is John Carter. The 'Visual Effects' in John Carter were brilliant. It was a pleasure to watch that movie many times and just for those visuals alone. Although the storyline, the cast, the characters, and direction were also fantastic. In my book, John Carter would definitely get my vote.
