The 79th Academy Awards take place here Sunday with an array of international movie talent descending on the glitziest red carpet of all for what are poised to be the globalization Oscars. An unusually diverse field are jostling for honors, with no fewer than nine countries--Australia, Benin, Britain, Canada, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Spain and the United States--represented in the acting categories alone. The cosmopolitan theme also extends to the subject matter of films competing at the industry's most prestigious annual awards, whether it is the Japanese-language "Letters from Iwo Jima" or the multilingual drama "Babel."
