The partnership between the filmmakers and Altitude Films marks their second collaboration. Altitude Films oversaw the distribution of "Amy," which grossed £3.76 million and became the single most profitable British documentary the UK box office has ever seen. Altitude Films upcoming releases include Jeremy Saulnier’s "Green Room," Oren Moverman’s "Time Out of Mind" and Jonás Cuarón’s "Desierto."
"I’ve long been a fan of Diego Maradona. I was taken by his character, his genius, honesty, passion, humor and vulnerability," said Kapadia of the documentary. "I first wanted to make a film about Maradona even before I directed "Senna," so I'm very excited to have this opportunity. Diego is the greatest player of all time but with flaws and weaknesses, his life was one of extremes, but somehow, ever the street fighter, he has survived to tell the tale."
Will Clarke, founder of Altitude Films, added, "Asif, James and Chris have revolutionised the documentary genre. We’re delighted to be working with them again in the UK after the record-breaking success of "Amy." Applying their inimitable style to an iconic sportsman like Maradona will be every bit as compelling as we have come to expect from this team."
Release dates for "Maradona" have yet to be announced for the UK.
