Altman, Chabrol, Lumet, Panahi, Winterbottom and 14 Others Square Off at '06 Berlinale; 130+ Feature

Nineteen new films will vie for prizes at the 2006 Berlinale -- the Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin -- beginning Thursday in the German capital. The 56th Berlin International Film Festival will present a total of 26 films in its competition section, with higher profile U.S. films screening out of competition. Anticipated international titles, from such filmmakers as Robert Altman, Claude Chabrol, Sidney Lumet, Jafar Panahi, Pen-ek Ratanaruang, Oskar Roehler, and Michael Winterbottom will debut in competition at the event. The event kicks-off Thursday with Marc Evans' film, Snow Cake, starring Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver.

In the large Panorama section, 51 features will screen -- 37 are narrative and 14 are documentary films. The section kicks off on Thursday night with Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe's British film "Brothers of the Head," recently acquired for U.S. distribution by IFC Films. The section will present 31 world premieres. Meanwhile, the popular Forum section will include some 55 feature films (over 50 minutes in length. The sibebar presents mostly unconcentional films by first-time filmmakers.

The Berlinale will close this year on February 18th, following the annual award ceremony, with a restored version of Sam Peckinpah's classic western, "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid: Special Edition. The screening will mark the first screening of the special edition, based on notes by the director and details provided by his colleagues.
