Amazon has acquired exclusive rights to the Oscar-nominated "The Broken Circle Breakdown" from Tribeca Film, the company announced today. The Belgium film, which debuted in the U.S. at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival, is nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. The feature, which follows a couple over the course of seven years as they fall in love and experience a family tragedy, is based on a play co-written by Johan Heldenbergh, one of the film's stars. The Flemish-language film was written by van Groeningen and Carl Joos and directed by Felix van Groeningen.
As part of the licensing deal with Tribeca Film, Amazon also nabbed the rights to the documentary "How to Make Money Selling Drugs," "Greetings from Tim Buckley," "Sparrow's Dance" and the animated children's film "Moon Man." "The Broken Circle Breakdown" will make its exclusive subscription debut on Amazon Prime Instant Video on February 20, just a week before the Academy Awards on March 2."The Academy has honored 'The Broken Circle Breakdown' with a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category and we are excited to bring this engaging film to Prime members," said Brad Beale, Director of Digital Video Content Acquisition for Amazon. "We know the independent film category is a favorite among Amazon customers and this agreement with Tribeca Film will add even more high-quality films to Prime Instant Video."
