Amazon Studios Greenlights a 'Zombieland' Original Series Pilot

Amazon is making its way toward producing and offering up its own slate of original series, like Hulu and Netflix, though the online retail giant is taking a more circuitous path toward those shows. Amazon Studios was initially launched as a place for films to be crowdsourced, reworked with user feedback and pushed to production -- the company added TV to its plate back in May of last year.

Amazon announced today that it's adding another project to its slate of original series pilots -- "Zombieland," from Sony Pictures Television, is officially the company's seventh order, a potential comedy based on Ruben Fleischer's 2009 film of the same name. "'Zombieland' is a fan favorite and we can't wait to see where this story line goes in a serialized format," said Amazon's Roy Price in the release. "We've been announcing a lot of exciting exclusive content for Prime Instant Video, like 'Downton Abbey,' 'Under the Dome' and 'Justified,' and we think adding original shows to that lineup is going to make Prime even more enticing for customers."

Amazon has been making its way toward producing and offering up its own slate of original shows, like Hulu and Netflix. Amazon Studios was initially launched as a place for films to be crowdsourced, reworked with user feedback and pushed to production. The company added TV to its plate back in May of last year. Now Amazon's been greenlighting pilots, though for the most part they're far from the work of newbies boldly lifted to professional status by the force of the internet, the original concept under which this programming initiative was announced. The initial six pilots are from the well-established likes of "Doonesbury" creator Garry Trudeau, The Onion and "Daily Show" writer David Javerbaum, with only one, "Those Who Can’t," coming from Amazon Studios' online open door process.

The "Zombieland" pilot comes from writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and producer Gavin Polone, all of whom worked on the film. Eli Craig ("Tucker and Dale vs. Evil") will serve as director, with Kirk Ward ("The Island") taking on the role of Tallahassee (played in the film by Woody Harrelson), Maiara Walsh ("Desperate Housewives") taking on Emma Stone's part as Wichita, Tyler Ross ("Milkshake") in the Jesse Eisenberg role as Columbus and Izabela Vidovic in Abigail Breslin's part as Little Rock.

"Zombieland" will join Amazon's six other comedy pilots already in production -- "Alpha House," "Browsers," "Dark Minions," "Onion News Empire," "Supanatural" and "Those Who Can't" --  as well as six children's pilots. The 13 will be made available on Amazon Instant Video and LOVEFiLM UK, where customers will be able to view them for free, with their reviews used to determine which are ordered to series.
