Arthouse Pix Honored At ShoWest

Limited release films with strong box-office legs were feted at ShoWest
in Las Vegas on Monday night, as ACNielsen EDI handed out the Reel
Awards. Two Miramax releases picked up prizes, with "The Wings of the
Dove
" winning for Highest Grossing Limited Release Film, grossing $12
million plus to date and "Shall We Dance" won for Highest Grossing
Foreign Film, having amassed over $9.5 million to date. Fox
Searchlight
's best picture hope, "The Full Monty" won for Breakthrough
Film of the Year, picking up over $42 million in domestic box office and
nearly $215 million worlwide to-date, while being budgeted at a
comparitively measly $3.5 million.


"In 1997, there were 270 limited releases that cumulatively grossed $192
million to date. That equates to an average gross of $712,000," said
ACNeilsen EDI President Marcy Polier in a prepared statement. She added,
"These three over-achievers each outdistanced the average by more than
ten-fold."
