Here Come the Contenders: Lars von Trier's "Melancholia" Gets a November 11 Release Date and More

Lars von Trier's "Melancholia" Magnolia

Now that we're in the second half of 2011, many of the would-be awards contenders are poising themselves for prime theatrical releases.

"Melancholia" made news at Cannes, not just for its controversial director Lars von Trier but for its stellar reviews, Best Actress winner Kirsten Dunst and nomination for the Palme d'Or. Now it gets a November 11 release through Magnolia.

"Weekend," from writer-director-editor Andrew Haigh, debuts September 23 through Sundance Selects. The film, about a one-night stand that becomes something more, premiered and became a breakout hit at SXSW and has played at several fests since, including Los Angeles' Outfest and the upcoming New Fest in New York.

Magnolia will release Anne Sewitsky's Norwegian "Happy, Happy" - which won the Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema (Drama) - on September 15, as well as NYC club scene documentary "Limelight," from director Billy Corben, on September 23, and Mark Pellington's mid-life crisis thriller "I Melt With You" December 9. The film stars Carla Cugino, Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven and Rob Lowe as 40-somethings gathering for their college reunion.

Iranian drama "A Separation," directed by Asghar Farhadi gets a December 30 release through Sony Pictures Classics after winning several awards at the Berlin Int'l Film Festival, Sydney and Iran's Fajr Film Festival.

Pedro Almodovar's "The Skin I Live In" pushes its release to October 14, while Jeff Nichols' "Take Shelter" moves up two weeks to September 30, both through Sony Pictures Classics. "Skin" premiered at Cannes to slightly mixed reviews, while "Take Shelter" had a strong premiere at Sundance before taking the Critic's Week Grand Prize and SADC Award for Best Feature at Cannes. It currently has a promising 100% Tomatometer score.
