Danny Boyle‘s “Slumdog Millionaire” has been named the best film of the year by the National Board of Review. Celebrating its 100th year, the Board also awarded “Slumdog” best adapted acreenplay honors for Simon Beaufoy and best breakthrough actor for Dev Patel. “Slumdog” joined “Burn After Reading,” “Changeling,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “The Dark Knight,” “Defiance,” “Frost/Nixon,” “Gran Torino,” “Milk,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “WALL-E,” and “The Wrestler” in the organization’s top ten list. Last year, four of the five Academy Award nominees for Best Picture were featured in the NBR’s top ten. “2008 was a very special year for film with diverse and wonderful storytelling and we are proud to honor these achievements,” said NBR President Annie Schulhof in a statement. “Several of the films from our Top 10 list, along with our Best Film of the Year, share the universal message about the resilience and the strength of the human spirit. ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ with brilliant direction by Danny Boyle and incredible performances, shares a passionate story about one man’s courage and determination for the woman he loves.” The awards, which kick off a series of critics’ awards announced throughout December and early January, also named best actor Clint Eastwood for his work on “Gran Torino” and best actress Anne Hathaway for her work on “Rachel Getting Married.” Other acting honors went to “Vicky Cristina Barcelona“‘s Penelope Cruz for best supporting actress, “Milk“‘s Josh Brolin for best supporting actor, Viola Davis for best breakthrough actress and Melissa Leo and Richard Jenkins sharing the organization’s Spotlight Award.
