AWARDS WATCH '08 | "Wall-E" Woos LA Critics

For the first time in their 33 year history, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association has awarded its highest honor to an animated film. Andrew Stanton's "Wall-E" has been named the LAFCA's best picture of the the year. "The Dark Knight" was named runner-up, while other major winners included "Slumdog Millionaire"'s Danny Boyle for best director, "Milk"'s Sean Penn for best actor, "Happy-Go-Lucky"'s Sally Hawkins for best actress, and James Marsh's "Man on Wire" for best documentary. Since 1990, only two LAFCA winners have not gone on to a best picture Oscar nomination: 2002's About Schmit" and 2003's "American Splendor." Last year, Paul Thomas Anderson's "There Will Be Blood" won best picture and best director.

Best Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" and "Elegy"
Runner-up: Viola Davis, "Doubt"

Best Screenplay: Mike Leigh, "Happy-Go-Lucky"
Runner-up: Charlie Kaufman, "Synecdoche, New York"

Best Foreign-language film: "Still Life"
Runner-up: "The Class"

Best Documentary: "Man on Wire"
Runner-up: "Waltz With Bashir"

Best Animation: "Waltz With Bashir"
