AWARDS WATCH | “Doubt,” “Button,” “Milk,” Compete for SAG Awards by Eugene Hernandez & Peter Knegt (December 18, 2008)
Amidst increasing talk of a looming Screen Actors Guild strike, the large Hollywood union announced the nominations for its upcoming awards honoring the best of 2008. John Patrick Shanley’s “Doubt” led the 15th annual Screen Actor’s Guild Award nominations, taking individual nods for its entire cast (Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis) and for best ensemble. “Milk” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” followed with three nominations a piece. “Doubt,” “Button” and “Milk” joined “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Frost/Nixon” in the best ensemble category, where notable omissions included “Revolutionary Road,” “The Dark Knight” and “Rachel Getting Married.” Other snubs included “Road”‘s Leonardo DiCaprio for actor and supporting actor Michael Shannon, as well as “Gran Torino”‘s Clint Eastwood, “Happy-Go-Lucky”‘s Sally Hawkins, “I’ve Loved You So Long”‘s Kristin Scott Thomas, “The Wrestler”‘s Marisa Tomei, “Milk”‘s James Franco, “Rachel”‘s Rosemarie DeWitt, and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”‘s Cate Blanchett. The winners will be announced on Sunday, January 25th, 2009.
