Exactly how does the Academy decide on Oscar hosts? And how, after last year's James Franco/Anne Hathaway flopfest and this week's Ratner fiasco, did they calm down the ever-frustrated Twitterverse? There were Facebook movements begging for the Muppets or Neil Patrick Harris, but Twitter told us that the Academy has gone back to square one. Today, Billy Crystal, who has hosted the Oscars regularly in the past and is certainly a "safe" choice, tweeted this:
Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show.
It looks like the Academy has decided to get rid of the headlines the quickest way they know how. Billy Crystal is an enjoyable and uncontroversial host. But wouldn't it have been amazing to see Miss Piggy open the show by spoofing "My Week With Marilyn"?
