Fox Searchlight announced today that Nate Parker's "Birth of a Nation" will be released in theaters on October 7, 2016.
Following a hugely successful Sundance premiere last month, the film will enjoy a nationwide release on its opening weekend. "Birth of a Nation" made industry headlines at Sundance by launching a bidding war immediately following its first screening, prompting Searchlight to pay $17.5 million, the largest acquisition price in the festival's history. Parker, the film's writer and director, stars alongside Penelope Ann Miller, Armie Hammer and Jackie Earle Haley.
As the release calendar now stands, the film will open up alongside the Ben Affleck-led "The Accountant" (from "Warrior" director Gavin O'Connor) and Tate Taylor's screen adaptation of the popular novel "The Girl on the Train." This puts "Birth" right in the heat of awards season, in the immediate aftermath of fall festivals in Telluride and Toronto.
