Brainstorm Media Moves Into Theatrical Distribution With Todd Solondz's 'Dark Horse'

VOD aggregator Brainstorm Media is entering the theatrical distribution field with Todd Solondz’s “Dark Horse,” which it acquired Tuesday. The company plans a limited release beginning June 8 in New York that will expand to other cities.

Justin Bartha, Selma Blair, Mia Farrow, Jordan Gelber, Donna Murphy, Christopher Walken, Zachary Booth and Aasif Mandvi star in the story of a deadbeat guy who tries to move out of his junior high bedroom after falling in love with a similarly arrested woman. Tragedy ensues.

Solondz's latest drama played at the Venice, Deauville and Toronto film festivals in 2011.

Indiewire contributor Ted Hope, who also produced Solondz’s “Happiness,” produced the project with Derrick Tseng. Nick Quested is executive producer.

“With this move into theatrical, there’s no better film, producer, or team with whom to work,” said Brainstorm Media president Meyer Shwarzstein. “We have the best of both worlds – taking our team’s extensive experience in marketing and distributing films in all platforms while utilizing all the new media tools available to us. We’ve created a 21st Century deal structure that allows the producer to have true input into how we’re releasing the film.”

The Film Collective’s Ruth Vitale and Vitagraph Films’ David Shultz and Margot Gerber will consult with Hope’s Double Hope Films on the movie’s release.

“With Brainstorm, we found a team that was willing to put our film and the audience first,” said Hope (“21 Grams,” “In the Bedroom”). “Like that old 35 mm we once all loved, ‘Dark Horse’ will be playing only in theatres this summer! Meyer and his team have constructed a way for the filmmakers and our investors to be true partners in this venture.”
