Strand Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to Celina Sciamma's "Girlhood," which recently world premiered in the Director's Fortnight section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. The film marks the director's third feature following "Water Lilies" and "Tomboy." In his glowing review for Inidewire, Eric Kohn called "Girlhood" "one of the best coming of age movies in years."
The deal was done between Jon Gerrans of Strand Releasing and Nicolas Brigaud-Robert of Films Distribution.
"Sciamma is just over 30 and a wonder kid of French Cinema, in just three movies, she went from ‘promising’ to ‘prominent.' Films critics and movie lovers have been supporting her work around the world for a good reason since the beginning : her story telling is a breath of fresh air in European cinema and she directs with a true cinematic energy seldom seen in French movies," said Brigaud-Robert.
Strand plans for an early 2015 release.
