The film, which stars Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva, focuses on an elderly couple, Anne and Georges, who are retired music teachers. When Anne suffers a stroke that paralyzes her on one side of the body, they are forced to struggle through her painful decline.
Other major winners included Cristian Mungiu's "Beyond The Hills," which took prizes for best screenplay and best actress (for both Cosmina Stratan and Christina Flutor), and Matteo Garrone's "Reality," which won the Grand Prix (or runner-up for the Palme).
Shut out was Leos Carax's "Holy Motors," which was one of the most polarizing films of the festival.
