Castro Theater Welcomes German Films

by Aaron Krach

The 3rd Annual Berlin and Beyond film festival opens tonight in San
Francisco, January 9-15. Most of the films are making their U.S. premiere,
and will screen in the historic Castro Theater. The festival opens with
"Winter Sleepers", about passion, love and death in the snowy Bavarian
mountains. This is Tom Tykwer's captivating follow up to his acclaimed
first feature, "Deadly Maria".

The series will also include Werner Herzog presenting his latest film, the
full length documentary "Little Dieter Needs to Fly". It tells the story of
Dieter Dengler, a flying enthusiast whose life takes him from Germany to
Vietnam and into the hands of the Vietcong guerrillas. His escape is
recreated by Herzog. Switzerland's official Academy Award entry, "Fire in
Paradise
", by Stefan Ruzowitsky will also be shown. A newly restored print
of "Faust", Murnau's silent film masterpiece from 1926, with Dennis James
performing the accompaniment on the Castro's mighty Wurlitzer will also be
shown.
