DAILY NEWS: 9th NY Video Fest Uploads with 30 Artists

(indieWIRE/7.21.00) -- This year's New York Video Festival
(running tonight through July 27) features 10 programs and over 30
video artists, including Festival veterans Steve Reinke, Elizabeth
Subrin, Susanna Donovan, Chris Petit, and Halflifers Torsten Burns
and Tony DiScenza. Rounding up a broad band of unusual suspects, the
organizers Graham Leggat, Marian Masone and Gavin Smith describe
the featured works as "over the top to round the bend." It's no lie.
The programs run a refreshing gamut from poetic ("Electronic
Unconscious" and "Space Exploration") to frontal ("All Too Human"
and "Only Disconnect") to the fastidiously absurd and trippy
("Through The Looking Glass"), all bestowing the NYVF with a
promising edge.

There are a number of pleasant surprises here, notably Trent Harris's
"Beaver Trilogy" featuring Sean Penn and Crispin Glover, Jacqueline
Goss's ode to Helen Keller and Janet Frame, "So To Speak" and Miranda
July's "Nest of Tens."

One of the highlights of the festival is bound to be a program of
video diarist George Kuchar's work called "Large and in Charge!"
along with a rare live appearance from the legendary filmmaker.
Also on hand will be New York Press film critic and waxing emeritus
on music video culture Armond White with "Coded Language," a foray
into subversion and transcendence in pop iconography. The ResMedia
Group, of RESFEST fame, also presents a screening and panel
discussion, "We Went Digital, Where Were You?" on the 26th.
Don't get asked twice, go see this free range of roaming expression.
Nestle in the fringes and enjoy. [Onome Ekeh]
