DAILY NEWS: Academy Celebrates 75 with Series of Best Picture Winners

(indieWIRE/03.19.02) -- With the 74th Academy Awards just a few days away,
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has already begun
to look ahead at its 75th anniversary. AMPAS announced yesterday that it
will host an 18-month screening series of Best Picture Oscar winners.
The program, titled "Facets of the Diamond: 75 Years of Best Picture
Winners," will be unfold in chronological order beginning with the
second Best Picture film, "The Broadway Melody" (directed by Harry
Beaumont). The recipient of the inaugural Best Picture award, "Wings"
(directed by William A. Wellman), will screen during a special anniversary
celebration at the Academy on a later date. Additional material -- such
as shorts, trailers and behind-the-scenes footage -- from the same year
as the featured Best Picture will accompany each screening.
"This is going to be a fantastic opportunity for people to see high-quality
prints of extraordinary films in the finest conditions possible," commented
Bruce Davis, the Academy's Executive Director, in a prepared statement.
"We'll try to make each Monday evening in our theater an enjoyable trip
back to the year of that night's film."
The Academy's organizational banquet, attended by 300 people at the Biltmore
Hotel in Los Angeles, took place May 11, 1927 with the first Academy Awards
presented in May, 1929. There are numerous special events planned for members
and the public throughout its diamond anniversary year.
Screenings of Best Picture Oscar winners are scheduled in the Academy's
Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles on Mondays at 7:30pm, starting
May 13th. A series pass for all 75 screenings is available for $75,
and individual tickets are $5 with "The Broadway Melody," "All Quiet
on the Western Front," "Cimarron," "Grand Hotel," "Cavalcade," and "It Happened One Night" on sale April 1.
The Academy Awards will be held this Sunday in Hollywood. The films
competing for the 74th Best Picture Oscar slot are: "A Beautiful Mind,"
"Gosford Park," "In The Bedroom," "The Lord of the Rings: The
Fellowship of the Ring," and "Moulin Rouge!" [Brian Brooks]
