(indieWIRE/06.29.01) -- Landmark Theaters has announced that Marty
Zeiderman
is joining the company as a film buyer. The exec was the
Sr. VP of Distribution at Paramount Classics and the head of
distribution at Miramax and FineLine.


"Marty will bring a wealth of knowledge from the distribution side of the
business to the specialized circuit." commented Landmark Exec. VP Bert
Manzari
in a prepared statement. Landmark's Doug Freed will be leaving his
position "to pursue interests outside of theatrical exhibition," according
to the announcement.


In other Landmark news, Audra Freeman has been promoted to the position of
Director of Advertising, replacing Robert Woods who is joining McDonald
and Associates

>> NYFA Announces Grants for New York Artists


(indieWIRE/06.29.01) -- New York's largest organization providing individual
grants to artists, the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), announced
that it is awarding over $1 million to 161 artists for its 2001 NYFA
Fellowship
program. The unrestricted $7,000 award is given to each artist
from eight areas of creativity including film, poetry, nonfiction literature,
performance art, computer arts, crafts, multidisciplinary work, printmaking/
drawing/artists books, and sculpture. Awardees of the Fellowship were chosen
from a pool of 3,200 applicants and were selected following a panel review by
peers.


"NYFA Fellowships allow artists the time and resources necessary for them to
think, work and create," said Theodore S. Berger, Executive Director of NYFA
in a prepared statement regarding the grants.


This year, for the first time, the organization is presenting the $25,000
NYFA Prize, also an unrestricted grant which NYFA awards through the gift of
an anonymous donor to, according to a press release, "an artist of exceptional
promise." NYFA's Artist Advisory Committee selected six finalists from the
pool of 2001 Fellowship recipients. A Board of Trustees committee then
selected this year's winner, Motheith McCollum who will receive the prize
in addition to his $7,000 Fellowship grant.


Selected in the Film category were: Jorge Aguirre, Shawn Atkins (Gregory
Millard Fellow
), Pierre Bennu, Stephanie Black, Matthew E. Buckingham
Marcia M. Donalds (Deceased), Jorg Fockele, Barbara Hammer, Caran
Hartsfield (Lily Auchincloss Fellow), Tessa Hughes-Freeland, Cristina
Ibarra, Heiko Kalmbach, Lana Lin, Joshua Marston, Monteith McCollum
(NYFA Prize), Bill Morrison, Bernardo Ruiz, Peter Sillen and Juan Carlos
Zaldivar.


Throughout the year, the NYFA's Artist & Audience Exchange will allow
Fellowship members to display their work throughout New York including free
public events, readings, workshops, and performances etc.


NYFA receives funding of its $12 million annual budget from individual,
corporate, foundation and public donations in addition to the organization's
fiscal sponsorship/management services for artists. The New York Foundation
for the Arts has worked on behalf of the arts for 30 years. [Brian Brooks]



>> 2nd Pixie Nominations Showcase Online Films


The Second Annual Pixie Awards, which honor excellence in Internet film,
posted their nominations yesterday. Sherry Beckman and Yu Hasegawa-Johnson's "Milk & Honey," an AtomFilm's entrant, leads the pack with seven nominations, including two best actress nominations for Tiffany Walker and
Yolanda Snowball. "Black XXX-Mas," "Love, Death and Cars," and "Neto's Run" each received three nods. "405" landed on the short lists for both Best Technical Effects and Best Pixar.


Despite the dot-com dropout rate, submissions to the awards tripled this
year. Only 10% of the films on the list were sent in by the websites. The
other 90% were stamped with the return addresses of filmmakers. The number
of companies offering films dived from over 30 to four or five, according to
Mike Martin, founder and producer of the Directors Board Awards which
organizes the Pixies. Not only have companies disappeared but events like
the Yahoo! Internet Life Online Film Festival evaporated. "You start off
thinking that it's going to be a terrible year and suddenly you're alone,
the only thing that's happening out there," Martin told indieWIRE.


It's not just the economy that's changed; the films Martin and the judges
are watching this year are different too. Submissions came from 10 different
countries and 17 states. "We're seeing more serious work, less spoofs, more
experimental animations and a lot more technical talent," Martin observed.


The goal of the Pixies, the name taken from pixar, is to further the
legitimization of online film. For that reason Martin established a
peer-to-peer award based on the Oscars rather than an audience appreciation
model like the People's Choice Awards. Judges are drawn from the filmmaking
community in general, many with little experience with online film. "When
these judges, who have never heard about this film, say this is best one out
there, It's as close to the truth as you can get," Martin said. Last year's
winner was Joe Nussbaum's Internet hit "George Lucas In Love." [Maud
