DAILY NEWS: New Festival Lineup; Atlanta Winners; Lot 47 Deal

>> New Festival Set for 12th New York Lesbian & Gay Festival


(indieWIRE/05.23.00) - Just in time for the June pride revelry, the 12th
Annual NY Lesbian & Gay Film Festival
, presented by the New Festival and
hosted by the New School's Tishman Auditorium and New York University's Cantor Film Center presents its opening night festivities with Jamie
Babbit
's "But I'm a Cheerleader" June 1st. Spanning 11 days, the festival,
which among other events will host a benefit with PBS's gay news magazine,
In The Life, will include 36 dramatic features, 23 documentary features, and
100 short films. Seven World Premieres and ten U.S. Premieres will screen,
including the world premiere of "The Boys of Manchester: On the Set of
'Queer As Folk
,'" a behind-the-scenes documentary of the explosive British
TV show about the lives of three very different gay men in Manchester are
part of the extensive roster.


Director Nisha Ganatra's sexy debut, "Chutney Popcorn," about the clash
between a traditional Indian mother and her New York-bred lesbian daughter,
as well as Jon Shear's "Urbania," a spell-binding journey into one man's
psyche as he comes to terms with recent events in his life, will be the
centerpieces of this year's festival. The closing night gala feature, "The
Broken Hearts League
" by Greg Berlanti, will be followed by an awards

. Other winners at the Festival, which wrapped up this weekend,
include Kevin McKiernan's "Good Kurds, Bad Kurds" (Best Documentary), Philip Bartell's "Crush" (Best Narrative), Aiayana Elliott's "The Ballad of Rambling Jack" (Audience Award), Fran Krause's "Mister Smile" (Best Animated) and Jeff Walker's "My Big Heart" (Best Experimental). [Eugene Hernandez]

>>Lot 47 Announces Second Cannes Market Acquisition


(indieWIRE/5.23.00) -- Lot 47 has acquired all North American rights to Harry
Sinclair
's "The Price of Milk," following its world premiere in the Market
section of the Cannes Film Festival. Earlier in the festival, Lot 47 also
acquired the rights to the Australian film, "Russian Doll."


The company plans to open the movie on Valentine's Day 2001, after releasing
Aiyana Elliott's "The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack" in August, Tonie Marshall's "Venus Beauty Institute" in October, and Christopher Livingston's "Hit & Runway" in January." [Eugene Hernandez]
