DAILY NEWS: SF Queer Fest Winners; IFP Script Award; IFILM Update

>> 24th San Francisco Gay & Lesbian Festival Closes with Awards for "Eden," "175," and "Family"
(indieWIRE/6.27.00) -- After eleven days and 272 screenings, the 24th San
Francisco International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival came to a close Sunday
with a showing of Jamie Babbit's "But I'm a Cheerleader" and awards honoring a handful of festival films. Ticket sales at the event reached 74,000 for
the second year in a row, with 45 programs selling out, according to
The Audience Award for Best Feature was presented to Thomas Bezucha's "Big
Eden," while the Audience Award for Best Documentary was a tie between Rob
Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman's "Paragraph 175" and Debra Chasnoff's "That's A Family." The Audience Award for Best Short went to Philip Bartell for "Crush."
The Festival jury -- comprised of producer and Slamdance programmer Stephen
Israel, Variety critic Emmanuel Levy and producer Susan Stover -- awarded the Dockers First Feature Award to Jon Shear for his first feature,
Acclaimed filmmaker Barbara Hammer was awarded the Festival's 2000 Frameline
Award for Outstanding Contributions to Lesbian and Gay Media Arts. Hammer
attended the Festival with the world premiere of her new film, "History

>> IFILM Signs "Partners"; 24 Sites Now Share Info and Links on New IFILM Site
(indieWIRE/6.27.00) -- Continuing its transition into a site that
surveys and links to web-based film & video across the Internet,
IFILM has announced 15 new "preferred partners" that will receive
marketing opportunites in exchange for providing updated content
links and information.
Signing on with IFILM are Cinema Pop, FilmFilm.com, Film Roman,
Film World, Heavy, Like Television, Oddcast, Planet Out, PitchTV,
ROMP.com, shockwave.com, Sputnik7.com, Studionext, Web Site Story
and Z.com. Existing partners include AlwaysI, Eveo, HonkWorm, IceBox,
NibbleBox, RSUB, ReelShort, Urban Entertainment and Wirebreak.
"These agreements are a win-win for all concerned: IFILM, our partners,
and, most of all, consumers who now have one central place to help them
find the best film content from all of the best sites on the web,"
commented IFILM CEO Kevin Wendle in a prepared statement.
IFILM which recently relaunced its website (www.ifilm.com), also tightened
its ship, laying off 9 employees on the business development
and administrative side. However, according to a company spokesperson,
the move was to remove internal job overlap. The spokesperson told
indieWIRE that the same number of employees are being hired on the
editorial side under the direction of new Editor-in-Chief Lew Harris
as IFILM continues to roll out recent acquisitions and develop its
IFILM Pro brand.
Last week, IFILM announced a success story, noting that one of its
recent online "hits" has caught the eye of CAA agents. Bruce Banit
and Jeremy Hunt, creators of "405 The Movie" which was unveiled on
IFILM earlier this month, have been signed by CAA New Media as a
result of being introduced to the oniine movie by IFILM executives.
The three-minute video, with special effects created by the
filmmakers on home computers, is currently atop the IFILM
"Top 10 Viewed" and "Top 10 Rated" lists. [Eugene Hernandez]
>> IFP Announces Script Award
(indieWIRE/6.27.00) -- The IFP has announced a new screenplay award for
scripts participating in its annual Independent Feature Film Market
(September 15 - 22, 20000). Dubbed the Pipedream Script Award, the juried
prize will give the recipient a $10,000 award -- the screenplay must not yet
have a producer attached and all rights must be available. The prize is
sponsored by Annie Schulhof, President of Pipedream Productions.
IFP Market Director Milton Tabbot told indieWIRE yesterday that despite
the eligibility requirements, Schulhof and Pipedream will have no ties to the
winning screenplay. He added that she is hoping to find and support a
recipient who is at an early stage with a screenplay and in need of
resources to help them develop it further.
Schulhof, a longtime IFP supporter who has committed to the award for three
years, commented in a prepared statement, "It is my desire to help provide
support to people who are just starting out in the business, and for whom
this kind of boost will enable them to continue to work on their project."
