(indieWIRE/ 9.22.00) -- The strength of contemporary Iranian cinema has been
acknowledged as a trio of movies from the fall festival circuit have found
theatrical distribution. Three Iranian films, two of which are screening at
The New York Film Festival, which opens tonight at Lincoln Center, have been
acquired. Jafar Panahi's "The Circle," Bahman Farmanara's "Smell of Camphor, Fragrance of Jasmine" and Hassan Yektapanah's "Djomeh" each secured a deal this week on the eve of the New York festival.

Panahi's "The Circle" has had an acclaimed festival run this fall, debuting
in Venice where it won The Golden Lion and the critics prize. Its run
continued in Toronto and the film comes to Lincoln Center on Tuesday. A New
York Film Festival announcement yesterday indicated that the movie has been
acquired by Winstar Cinema and the deal was confirmed by a film press rep
late yesterday.

Meanwhile, Bahman Farmanara's "Smell of Camphor, Fragrance of Jasmine" was
bought by New Yorker Films. In a conversation with indieWIRE yesterday, New
Yorker's Susan Wrubel confirmed the deal and indicated that the movie will
be released theatrically next month. It will open at New York City's Lincoln
Plaza on October 13th before rolling out to other theaters. It will screen
at the New York Festival on September 30th.

New Yorker films has also acquired Hassan Yektapanah's "Djomeh," winner of
the Camera d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival, and an entry at the
Toronto festival. The company confirmed the deal and indicated that the
movie will be released early next year. [Eugene Hernandez]
