For the past 13 years, GKIDS has produced the New York International Children's Film Festival, the largest festival of its kind in the country. The festival features eclectic and provocative programming for kids and teens from around the world, and has premiered works from Danny Boyle, Hayao Miyazaki, Michel Ocelot, Katsuhiro Otomo and many others.
Frustrated by the amount of quality films in this genre that never seem to advance beyond a few festival screenings in America, our film distribution arm focuses on helping expand this niche and provide a new outlet for independent films in a genre where anything less than $50 million box office used to be a catastrophic failure. Our most recent release, "The Secret of Kells," was a 2010 Oscar nominee for Best Animated Feature.
Types of films in distributor’s slate:
We have two key areas of interest: auteur-driven independent animated films, and live-action films that explore unique youth experiences around the world.
Advice for filmmakers:
Before signing anything, talk with the people who will be directly involved in the day-to-day work on releasing your film to make sure they share your vision for finding the right audience, any marketing or promo ideas, and that they generally "get" it. Nobody knows your film better than you.
Who handles acquisitions:
Everyone in the company looks at films, but company president Eric Beckman and theatrical head Dave Jesteadt would be the primary acquisitions contacts.
