Xavier Dolan's 'Laurence Anyways' to be Released in the U.S. in June

"Laurence Anyways," the highly anticipated third feature from acclaimed Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan, finally has a U.S. release date, sort of. The film, which premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes last year winning the Queer Palm and Best Actress award, will be released in the U.S. by Breaking Glass Pictures in June.

Much like his two previous films "I Killed My Mother" and "Heartbeats," Dolan's "Laurence Anyways" also centers around a complicated relationship, yet this film deals with gender identity. Laurence, played by Melvil Poupard ("Broken English"), is a French teacher who after his 35th birthday tells his fiance Frederique, played by Suzanne Clement ("I Killed My Mother"), that he wants to become a woman. 

"For Laurence, what he comes to realize is that transgendered issues are one of the last taboos," Dolan told us in an interview last September. The film follows the couple over the span of a decade starting in 1989, what Dolan described as "the ideal birthing ground for a film about sex." Dolan said that he hopes the film's 12-year-long narrative will make audiences contemplate how much has changed for the transgender community, if much at all.
