"Sleepwalk With Me," written, directed and starring Mike Birbiglia, is a semi-autobiographical story of a struggling comedian at a life crossroads, and the growing prominence of his sleeping subconcious.
As Mike's family unites for his sister's wedding, Mike's anxieties take the form of vivid dreams. In one such dream, Mike races through wheat fields and is handed a bouquet filled with a newborn baby, tearing his bedroom apart in the process while sleepwalking. The growing intensity of Mike's sleeping life carries destructive real life implications for his relationship with his longterm girlfriend, played by Lauren Ambrose of "Six Feet Under" fame.
The trailer also highlights Birbiglia's fourth wall breaking narration, several lackluster comedy shows, and the snappy, yet pathos filled banter that occur between Mike and his family.
With a script co-written by "This American Life"'s Ira Glass, Birbiglia's directorial debut appears to be simultaneously one of the most surreal and true to life depictions of the life of a stand up comedian. Supporting Birbiglia and Ambrose are Carol Kane (Taxi), James Rebhorn (Meet the Parents), Cristin Milioti (30 Rock), and a slew of prominent comics. "Sleepwalk With Me" opens in theaters on August 24th.
