The full press release:
Park City/Los Angeles/Toronto - January 26, 2012 - Leading independent studio Entertainment One (eOne) is pleased to announce that it has acquired the North American distribution rights to Kieran Darcy-Smith’s directorial debut Wish You Were Here. Brokered by Sejin Park, eOne’s VP, Worldwide Acquisitions and Natja Noviani Rosner, LevelK’s Sales Director, the deal covers rights to the film in all media.
“This has truly been an extraordinary, and very special week,” said Darcy-Smith. “Today's sale to eOne really does cap the entire experience. It is twelve months to the day since we wrapped filming, and the movie has sold to the US and Canada - at the Sundance Film Festival, in the snow. Felicity and I are thrilled beyond words - and we're simply looking forward now to getting the film in front of as many people as we possibly can.”
Starring Joel Edgerton (Warrior, The Great Gatsby) and Felicity Price (Unfolding Florence), Teresa Palmer (I am Number 4, upcoming Warm Bodies), Wish You Were Here was written by Darcy-Smith and Price. This Australian film screened opening night in the prestigious World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival. Wish You Were Here is a psychological thriller that follows four friends who lose themselves in the fun of a carefree South East Asian holiday. Only three return home. Dave (Edgerton) and Alice (Price) come back to their young family desperate for answers about Jeremy’s (Anthony Starr) mysterious disappearance. When Alice’s sister Steph (Theresa Palmer) returns not long after, a secret is revealed about the night her boyfriend went missing. But it is only the first of many. Who amongst them knows what happened on that fateful night in Cambodia?
The film was produced by Angie Fielder of the award-winning, independent Australian production company Aquarius Films and was made in association with the acclaimed indie directors’ collective Blue-Tongue Films (Animal Kingdom.) Wish You Were Here is a Screen Australia presentation in association with Screen New South Wales, Fulcrum Media Finance, LevelK and Hopscotch. The film will be released in Australia and New Zealand by eOne’s Australian group Hopscotch in 2012. International Sales are handled by LevelK ApS.
“The eOne sale tops off what has been a fantastic experience at Sundance for the Wish You Were Here team. The film generated a real buzz amongst festival goers and screened to packed cinemas. We would like the film to be enjoyed by as many people as possible, and we are very excited to be working with eOne to bring Wish You Were Here to audiences all across the US and Canada.” Producer Angie Fielder from Aquarius Films said.
“eOne is thrilled to bring this film to North American theatres. Joel Edgerton and the rest of the cast are captivating, and the movie will leave audiences on the edge of their seats until its very last moment,” said Dylan Wiley, VP, Theatrical Marketing and Distribution, eOne Films US. In August 2011, Entertainment One announced an expansion of its North American operations and an increasing focus and commitment to theatrical distribution in the US. “We’re delighted to add this outstanding thriller to our growing slate. This was the first film I screened at Sundance and it was love at first sight,” added David Reckziegel, President, eOne Films North America.
Wish You Were Here is expected to be in theatres in the US and Canada in Fall 2012.
