Indiegogo, the global crowd funding platform, has partnered with The Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) to offer crowdfunding counseling and one-on-one support to members of IFP and its Made in NY Media Center. In addition, the partnership will establish the Indiegogo Fellowship, in which one business project or start-up, who best blends storytelling and technology, receives a complimentary six-month "Incubator" Level membership at the Center (which normally costs $450/month).
As part of the "Incubator" membership, businesses receive full-time desk space, mentorship, access to industry networks, teaching opportunities as well as access to conference rooms, a screening room and more. The Inaugural Fellowship is only open to projects that have had or currently have an Indiegogo campaign. The IFP will select the Indiegogo Fellow among applicants this summer. You can apply here (be sure to include all project and personnel information, as well as fellowship code, "INDIEGOGO.")
"Indiegogo is honored to partner with IFP and the Media Center on such an exciting opportunity," said Marc Hofstatter, Head of Film for Indiegogo, in a statement. "We empower companies and individuals to realize new innovations including new ways of approaching media and that is exactly what the Media Center is all about."
The first project from the new partnership just launched this week: Lyka’s Adventure, a project from Connected Sparks, a start up by the Media Center's Artist in Residence Lance Weiler.
Lyka’s Adventure centers on a small robot scientist from another planet who travels to Earth in an effort to save her home, which has been decimated by climate change. Along the way, she is aided by students ages 6 to 10 who use STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math). A related 8 book series is being published by Penguin Books. Also in the works is an interactive toy that syncs to a reading experience and unlocks stories and learning activities. There's also traveling STEAM lab that so far has staged 12 labs in 6 countries.
The Made in NY Media Center by IFP opened in the Fall of 2013.
"Crowdfunding has become an essential tool for businesses and individual artists alike, and having Indiegogo’s expertise available to our members is a welcomed addition to IFP and the Center’s resources for our members," said Joana Vicente, Executive Director, IFP and the Made in NY Media Center by IFP, in a statement. "Lance Weiler is a storyteller, entrepreneur and thought leader recognized as a pioneer for mixing storytelling and technology. Launching our indiegogo partnership with his project incubating here at the Media Center is a perfect expression of the types of projects the Indiegogo partnership and fellowship seeks to nurture."
