Variance Films has just acquired North American theatrical rights to Nance’s debut feature “An Oversimplification of Her Beauty,” which had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. With Jay-Z and Wyatt Cenac on board as executive producers, the film will now indeed appear in theaters near you beginning April 12.
As reported earlier, Cinema Guild will release the film on DVD and digital platforms in the late summer.
Nance’s film mixes multiple film formats as he tells the story of how his relationship with a young woman dangles excruciatingly on the edge of becoming romantic. Nance, Andrew D. Corkin and James Bartlett produced; Dream Hampton and Joy Bryant also are executive producers.
“I know it’s a bit cliché to say ‘you’ve never seen anything like this before,’ but if you’ve caught the film, I think you’ll agree that you’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Variance Films exec Dylan Marchetti. “Somehow, Terence has managed to blend documentary, narrative, ten different styles of animation, and a short film while telling a story that is immediately relatable to anyone who has ever loved someone who didn’t love them back, and frankly, that’s just about everyone.”
Variance released Spike Lee’s “Red Hook Summer” last year, and the company has Mark Webber’s “The End of Love” coming out in theaters March 1 — both also screened as part of the 2012 Sundance program. Dave Grohl’s “Sound City,” which will have its world premiere as part of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, will hit the big screen Feb. 1 via Variance.
In 2010, Variance released “Littlerock,” which also won the Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You Gotham Award, and in 2009 it released nominee “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench.”

I’m extremely excited to be partnering with Dylan and Variance to bring ‘An Oversimplification of Her Beauty’ to theaters. They are fearless defenders of the theatrical experience, and I’m convinced the best place to see this film is at a theater near you.”
Marchetti negotiated the deal with Traction Media on behalf of the producers.
