Earlier this week, we wrote about "App," the new Dutch thriller directed by Bobby Boermans which encourages viewers to keep their phones on in order to experience the second-screen content. The film will be the first major release from RAM Releasing, the new genre shingle under New York-based distributor Film Movement.
The new label will focus on genre films -- along the lines of titles released by Magnet, IFC Midnight or Dimension Films.
"We've had over 10 successful years to build the Film Movement brand - a boutique distributor that champions truly independent films from around the world, often some of the most lauded titles of the year....We recognized early on, however, that there would be a whole swath of films that may live up to the same standards we'd set for Film Movement titles, but do it in darker, edgier ways - films that might clash with what audiences have come to expect from Film Movement itself. The more we saw these films, the more we wanted to have a place to put them, a division that would be able to connect immediately with the audiences seeking them out, a place those audiences could turn to find the best in independent genre filmmaking," Film Movement president Adley Gartenstein told Indiewire.
RAM was announced late last year, but it's only now officially announcing its inaugural slate of genre films. After "App" premieres digitally and theatrically on May 9, RAM will release Kim Ki-duk's "Moebius" in late July. Film Movement and RAM Releasing will co-release an additional two titles in theaters in 2014: Wiktor Ericsson's documentary, "The Sarnos: A Life in Dirty Movies"and Manuel Martin Cuenca's "Cannibal," both slated for late summer.
"We're here to make a statement, whether that's with the first film to intentionally include second screen content in APP, or Kim's inexplicably-compelling statement on familial relationships and sex," said Gartenstein.
Rounding out RAM Releasing's titles for 2014 are Nate Taylor's "Forgetting the Girl," hitting home video on April 1 and Huh Jung's "Hide and Seek," which will be released on DVD on June 10 following its VOD release.
It's possible that the company will acquire and release more films later this year. "We expect between six to eight new titles as RAM gets up and running. But that's also flexible - we're more concerned about building the best catalog, putting the right films in the mix, than hitting a specific number of releases in a calendar year," Gartenstein said.
