Filmmaker Magazine Names 2013's '25 New Faces of Independent Film'

Filmmaker magazine has announced the results of its annual survey of the "25 New Faces of Independent Film." Published by IFP, the nation's largest and oldest organization of independent filmmakers, Filmmaker has been doing this list for 16 years. It will be featured in the Summer 2013 issue, which is online now, and available on newsstands at the end of the month, showcasing 25 up-and-comers poised to shape the next generation of independent film.

“The 2013 ’25 New Faces’ series finds young filmmakers fascinated by an incredible diversity of global stories,” said Filmmaker Editor-in-Chief Scott Macaulay. “The U.S.-Mexico border, Iceland, villages in Senegal and Malawi, a Lakota Native American reservation, economically-battered Cyprus and the frontier American West are just a few of the places these young filmmakers have ventured in search for new tales and characters.”

Other trends on this year's list, as Macaulay pointed out, are a profusion of multi-hyphenates, including actor/directors and filmmakers who shoot and edit their work. Interestingly, the list features three directors who are also software developers and a number of the filmmakers explore issues of technology, privacy, and security.

Past "New Faces" have included breakthroughs such as Ryan Googler ("Fruitvale Station,") Lena Dunham ("Girls"), Ryan Gosling ("The Believer"), Ellen Page ("Hard Candy) and Hilary Swank ("Boys Don't Cry"), among many others. Check out the full list here.

Karen's right this could be a lot better. I want photos, bios, a short Q&A interview with them would be good.

I'm disappointed that there aren't bio's on these 25 new faces. I'd like to know where they came from, where they studied, what their vision is, etc.
