Flixtour Announces Fall '98 Lineup, Comedies Reign

"I'm really groovin' to all the pictures that we got," said Tom McPhee
when he spoke by telephone to indieWIRE on Thursday. He was talking
about the lineup for the Fall 1998 edition of FLIXTOUR, the traveling
college exhibition tour that he founded and for which he serves as
executive director. The tour's lineup is comprised of three
feature-length films and six shorts, and McPhee expects to hit 40
colleges this fall, beginning on September 27th at the University of
Miami-Ohio and winding up, tentatively, on November 20th at Oakland
University.


The three features are Paul Feig's "Life Sold Separately," Tom Keenan's
"Enough Already" and Christopher Assefi's "Dreamer." "'Dreamer' kicks my
ass," McPhee said, adding that this year's lineup also boasted "probably
our best shorts program (yet)." Originally, the plan was to program four
features, but one of the films recently received a positive review in a
trade publication and dropped out to enter into talks with distributors.


The shorts lineup for the tour includes "New Testament," directed by
Philip Pelletier; "Bad Bosses Go To Hell," directed by Erin Cramer;
"Have You Seen Patsy Wayne?," directed by Todd Korgan and screened at
Sundance in 1998; "Flight," directed by Sam Sadler screened at Cannes in
1998; "Accident," directed by: Peter Besson, and "The Light," directed
by Philip Scarborough.


This year's tour also makes a few changes to the list of sponsors and
participating organizations, adding College Campus Television (CCTV) and
bringing U. The National College Magazine on board as their major print
partner. "We developed a deep relationship with American Collegiate
Network which owns U.," said McPhee. Other sponsors include Movieline
Magazine
, MovieMaker Magazine, Film Craft Lab and Student.com

As to whether the films will be screened on video or projected on film,
McPhee places that choice squarely in the hands of the participating
colleges. "Some of the schools do not understand the value of servicing
their equipment," he remarked, adding "some prints got banged up." As a
result, if the equipment doesn't measure up to standards once it is
inspected, video projection will be used for that screening. In
addition, some schools don't have 35mm projectors, so the films on 35
will be screened on video. The goal is to screen on film as often as
possible. In addition, the shorts will all be projected on video, as
they will be included on a tape with Flixtour promos.


Why a Flixtour? According to McPhee, it's about "The ability to open up
the bottleneck and create some audience demand. It's amazing how much
project is out there and not being seen."
