Focus Features' Sixth Africa First Program Accepting Entries

In 2008, Focus Features launched Africa First, conceived as a program meant to support the filmmaking community in Africa. The institution offers participating filmmakers the chance to be awarded up to $10,000 dollars to finance their narrative short films made in continental Africa.

To commence its sixth year, the program is now accepting entries, Focus Features CEO James Schamus announced today. The initiative not only seeks to unite African filmmakers, but will allow the winners to visit New York in the fall for a weekend of workshopping and advising from African cinema experts, Focus executives, and others.

The Africa First Program will accept entries continuing through August 19th, with applications needing to be received by August 29th.

For application information, visit: www.focusfeatures.com/africafirst.

This is a great initiative. However, it is annoying that most of the shorts can only be viewed on hulu which is NOT available in African countries. How are the films, which are supposedly meant to promote emerging African filmmakers, helpful if African themselves can't access them!?
