Fox Searchlight's Fourth Festival Buy: "Another Earth"

Brit Marling and William Mapother in Mike Cahill's "Another Earth."

Fox Searchlight will handle all English-speaking distribution on Sundance U.S. Dramatic Competition entry "Another Earth," the feature debut of Mike Cahill. The sci-fi romance, which centers on the discovery of a mirror Earth, stars Brit Marling, who also co-wrote and produced the film. William Mapother also stars.

The film received a standing ovation at its Monday premiere. In a pre-Sundance indieWIRE interview, Cahill said, "Every film I will ever make from now until I’m 99 will ponder something about the metaphysical and what our existence is all about. It is all I care about."

The film, which premiered Monday, joins the distributor's other purchases of "Homework" (most worldwide rights), "Martha Marcy May Marlene" (worldwide rights) and "The Bengali Detective" (remake rights). "Another Earth" producers are Hunter Gray, Cahill, Marling and Nicholas Shumaker. Tyler Brodie and Ed Mezey are executive producers.

The deal was brokered by Fox Searchlight’s Executive Vice President of Worldwide Acquisitions Tony Safford, Senior Vice President of Business Affairs Megan O’Brien, Vice President of Acquisitions Ray Strache, Kevin Iwashina of Preferred Content and Graham Taylor, Mark Ankner, Liesl Copeland of WME. Andre Des Rochers of Gray Krauss Des Rochers LLP handled legal on behalf of Artists Public Domain.
