Those who are familiar with the phrase "six degrees of separation" have no doubt heard of its Hollywood-centric version "six degrees of Kevin Bacon," in which the actor's countless film connections highlight his established career. Now the 2014 SXSW Film Festival is going a step further, looking at the social impact both Bacon and his career have had with a special event entitled "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon: A Social Phenomenon Turns 20."
One of the first true social phenomenons in existence, the concept of "six degrees of Kevin Bacon" has accomplished the unprecedented feat of remaining in mainstream media even after an impressive two decades. Attributing to its long-lasting place in our general lexicon is the increasing number of promotional tools revolving around the concept, which include a book, a board game and now even an app. Most notable of these creations, however, is SixDegrees.com, a charity organization that uses the concept of a "small world" to encourage people to pledge donations online.
Kevin Bacon's past career successes have included film credits in "Apollo 13," "JFK," "Sleepers," "Hollow Man" and his breakthrough role in the original "Footloose," while his television credits include his current role on FOX's hit series "The Following" and his Golden Globe-winning turn in "Taking Chance".
"Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon: A Social Phenomenon Turns 20" will take place on Saturday March 8th at 3:30 pm at the Austin Convention Center and will feature a panel consisting of surprise guests who are -- you guessed it -- a few degrees of separation to the actor.
