Saturday, Honolulu, HI - (September 22, 2011) - The final film lineup and schedule is set for the 31st Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) presented by Halekulani with 212 films from 43 different countries. Some notable films this year include the Korean submission for the Oscar's Best Foreign Language film THE FRONT LINE, HIFF's first ever 3D film PINA 3D, and one of the most talked about films of the year, THE DESCENDANTS starring George Clooney and directed by Alexander Payne. This year, the Festival welcomes 25 world premieres, 7 international premieres, 16 North American premieres, 29 U.S. premieres, and 124 Hawaii premieres. New and continuing sections for this year's festival include HIFF Extreme, Express Yourself, EuroCinema Hawai'i, Film For Thought, Sound X Vision, Art + Design, Real Life, Anime Films, and Made in Hawaii.

HIFF honors two renowned filmmakers this year --- Alexander Payne, the writer-producer-director of THE DESCENDANTS will receive the Vision in Film Award presented by the City and County of Honolulu, which will be presented to him at the Closing Night presentation of THE DESCENDANTS.

"We are honored to present Alexander Payne with the Vision in Film Award presented by the City and County of Honolulu" says Chuck Boller, HIFF's Executive Director. "Considered one the premiere portraitists of American cinema, with such great films like SIDEWAYS, ABOUT SCHMIDT, ELECTION and CITIZEN RUTH, Payne's lens on Honolulu by adapting Kaui Hart Hemmings' amazing novel was just pure serendipity, as he has struck magic again with a heartfelt, humanistic story about a father and his two young daughters."

This year's FILMMAKER IN FOCUS presented by the Confucius Institute is Chinese superstar Jiang Wen. His work as an actor in such classic films as RED SORGHUM opposite Gong Li and directed by Zhang Yimou gained him international acclaim. As a member of the "sixth generation" of Chinese filmmakers, his directorial efforts also brought him world acclaim including the Grand Prix at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival for his film DEVIL AT THE DOORSTEP. HIFF will present two of his last directorial efforts, THE SUN ALSO RISES (2007) and his latest, the box-office smash LET THE BULLETS FLY (2010), which he also stars in with Chow Yun Fat. There will also be a panel discussion with University of Hawaii scholars, as Mr Wen discusses his body of work.
