"Headless Woman" Heads To Strand

Last December, Lucrecia Martel's "The Headless Woman" topped indieWIRE's poll of the best as-yet-undistributed films of 2008. Fortunately, Strand Releasing has made that article dated, acquiring all US rights to the film from Focus Features International.

The film, which is Martel's third feature, screened in competition in the Cannes Film Festival and is described by Strand as "a psychological mystery that finds a woman questioning herself after being involved in a car accident and the aftermath that event has on both her life and her psyche."

In a Cannes notebook, indieWIRE's Anthony Kaufman said: "Inspired by Martel’s dreams and nightmares, “The Headless Woman” is moody, mysterious and suffused with ominous portents and subtle critiques of the bourgeoisie."

The film was presented this past weekend at the Miami International Film Festival.

Strand plans for a release in August.
