"The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" narrowly beat out "Moonrise Kingdom" to top this chart of 2012's top specialty grossers with $46.4 million, compared to $45.5 million for "Moonrise." Just behind them were "2016: Obama's America" and "Silver Linings Playbook" with $33.5 million and $28.7 million, respectively (notably, "Silver" is still going strong, and could easily end up topping "Best Exotic" when all is said and done).

Those films collectively headed what was a pretty impressive year for limited and platform releases. In terms of milestones, 2012 was up big from last year. Seven films grossed over $15 million (only two did last year); 10 films grossed over $10 million (up from six in 2011); 18 films grossed over $5 million (up from 15 last year); and 29 films grossed over $3 million (up from 24).

Indiewire will offer a full analysis of the year's winners and losers at the specialty box office later this week. Until then, here's a simple chart of the top 50 grossers. Note that the grosses reflect numbers up to December 31, 2012. Only films both released in initially limited screen counts (under 1,000 screens) and by specialty distributors were included.
