How's Your Dotcom Treating You? Part 3
by Alan and Smithee
You make some interesting points, Dad. But. . . . I just slept with Steven
Spielberg last night! No, really, I'm just kidding. I slept with Ron
Howard. Whoops, that's not true either.
Maybe I'm a whore, but I am seduced by these powerful associations, tenuous
as they may be. And you're also right (firing back with Atom's big boys)
that Atom is linked with Propaganda, a very very cool movie/video/commercial
company. So, it's a toughie. And on top of that (to continue the sexual
imagery), Mediatrip has just gone to bed with Joe Roth (former Disney man;
"Armageddon"; etc), so it looks like all the companies will end up with their
Connections. I'm sure every shorts.com will get snapped up by Hollywood
Playahs in no time.
As for selling Internet rights only (to a purely Internet company like
Mediatrip), you ask what distribution company is going to be interested in a
property whose Internet rights are gone, and I say: distribution companies
may pass, but buyers wouldn't. DVD sales (which Mediatrip actually does do,
just non-exclusively, which is cool), TV sales, airline, foreign, etc etc.,
all these buyers could see your films on the site and instead of contacting
the site to buy your films (where the site may "forget" to follow through,
as you pointed out, and even if they do make a sale, they give you a crappy
percentage), they would contact you directly -- and you would make 100% of
the sale price, which is a lot better than the not-so-inspiring percentages
that are offered by the full-house internet "distribution" companies.
I'm beginning to suspect it's all about relationships. Which employees are
coolest? I personally would have lunch with the Atom people any day; I like
them a lot. The others are harder to get through to (Pop because they're in
pre-birth chaos, Mediatrip because they're exclusively LA-based, and I don't
live there, but they do respond quick to all inquiries and seem to care.)
Still thinking. Are you trying to talk me into going with Atom? It's true
they're good people, but aren't you curious to see what would happen if I
went with someone else?
