IFFM '97: Black Directors And Screenwriters Awards Announced
The first annual Gordon Parks Independent Film Awards, acknowledging new black directors and screenwriters, were given out Wednesday at the IFFM in New York City. The announcement of the awards brought nearly a 300% increase in the number of projects by African Americans at the market.
Chriss Williams took the $10,000 prize in the director's category for his film "Asbury Park." The film tells the story of a 17 year old kid who flees a murder in New Jersey and finds a new sense of identity from his reclusive uncle.
The $10,000 screenwriting prize went to Sheldon Sampson for "Two Guns," a story of two inner-city mothers and guns.
