IFP MARKET '06: With a New Conference and 186 Projects, Indie Film Market Set to Begin

In recent years, as the independent film business has morphed and matured, so to has the IFP Market, the leading program of the Independent Feature Project. Now under the Independent Film Week umbrella, the event will officially kick off with the New York City premiere and party for Dito Montiel's "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints." Running Sunday, September 17 through Thursday, September 21 in New York City, the IFP Market and its new Filmmaker Conference will present some 186 projects and offer a number of informational programs. Most of the projects, grouped in a few different categories, are still in development and seeking financing from a range of equity financiers, sales agents and distributors, while writers and directors will take meetings with potential producers and a number of finished film and works-in-progress screenings are also on tap.

At its newly branded conference, tied to the IFP's Filmmaker Magazine, a series of daily keynote conversations will present Miramax president Daniel Battsek, IFC Entertainment president Jonathan Sehring, CAA agent Micah Green, and Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos each morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Puck Building. Other sessions will profile companies and explore current issues in the film business, alongside coversations with filmmakers, from the DIY directors behind such films as "Four Eyed Monsters," "Head Trauma," and "The Guatemalan Handshake" to the director of "The Last King of Scotland."

Some 1,235 projects were submitted for consideration this year, according to market organizers and the 15% that were accepted are grouped in one of a few categories: Emerging Narrative (for writers and writer/directors seeking producers), No Borders International Co-Production Market (for producers with more developed packages that include some financing and cast attachments) and Spotlight on Documentaries (for documentary projects still at the financing through rough cut stage).
