iPOP at SXSW 2004

With a renewed sense of enthusiasm and a newly formed team of organizers, the 2004 SXSW Film Conference and Festival drew large audiences and praise from locals as well as visiting industry and filmmakers alike. The event kicked off on March 12th with the Texas Film Hall of Fame Awards gala at the busy Austin Studios. Awards were presented on March 16 in Austin.










Hanging out at The Austin Chronicle's party at SXSW '04 are director Jim Jarmusch, who offered a surprise sneak of his new film "Coffee and Cigarettes" with SXSW Festival Director and Austin Chronicle editor Louis Black.

Chatting at the annual Texas Film Hall of Fame Awards gala on the opening night of SXSW '04 are director Richard Linklater of the Austin Film Society with filmmaker Jonathan Demme, whose doc "The Agronomist" screened at the festival. The awards program honored Robert Duvall, Ethan Hawke, Forest Whitaker, Edwin "Bud" Shrake, and the film "The Getaway."

Outside the Paramount Theater following a crowded weekend screening are author and former film rep John Pierson with SXSW festival and conference producer Matt Dentler, who was singled out by many for his work on the event.

On stage at the Paramount, "Super Size Me" director Morgan Spurlock re-creates his post 30-day McDiet stomach. The film was a big hit with audiences and many would-be moviegoers were shut out of the overflow showing.

At Tuesday's awards program is Burnt Orange Productions head Carolyn Pfeiffer. Her new company is a unique film production effort that will bring film students into the commercial filmmaking process.

Holly Williams performs at BMI's annual "Howdy, Texas" dinner on the eve of the annual SXSW Music event. The party, at legendary music and BBQ site Stubb's, offered a taste of some of the musicians that would perform later in the week as well as a sampling of some tasty food.
