iPOP at the 2004 IFP Independent Spirit Awards

by Brian Brooks/indieWIRE

What's not to love about the annual IFP Independent Spirit Awards? The ceremony is held every year in beautiful Santa Monica, California by the beach. There's a cocktail "hour" at 11:30 a.m., enough celebs to satiate any a starfucker, the hilarious John Waters as a host, with his wicked humor, and every year, the organizers even make sure the weather is completely perfect, a fantastic reprieve for us winter weary New Yorkers. It is without a doubt, a highlight of our film calendar. (And, a big thanks to the folks at IFP and mPRm for giving Brian Brooks a seat inside the tent -- I didn't have to sneak in this year...)

Director John Waters once again gave a rip-roaring performance as the host of the IFP Independent Spirit Awards, which took place in Santa Monica on Saturday. His opener which poked fun at the MPAA screener ban brought laughs, and when MPAA chief Jack Valenti came on stage and handcuffed Waters, the audience roared with delight. He is pictured here inside the tent during the cocktail period (which began at 11:30am local time) prior to the broadcast with his date, actor Patricia Hearst.

Outside socializing under the beautiful California sun, "Pieces of April" and "The Station Agent" star Patricia Clarkson. Ms. Clarkson was nominated for a Spirit for her performance in "Pieces."

Whooping it up at the IFC/Target party held at the Shutters on the Beach (thanks to the hotel for the free Internet access) are actors Maggie Gyllenhaal and Emily Mortimer.

In case you haven't already noticed in iPOP, we love the Gyllenhaals... Well, they're hot and, more importantly, nice... Jake is pictured here outside the main tent catching some rays. Incidentally, indieWIRE almost got thrown out of the Spirits for taking this photo, by a fascist secret service-esque lguy with mirrored sunglasses who also threatened to take our camera (which would have really sucked!!!). Luckily we charmed our way out of the sticky situation. (oops, we didn't know it was a restricted area, honestly...).

Producer and A Band Apart head (with Quentin Tarantino) Lawrence Bender and oh so cool political commentator and once Calif. gubernatorial candidate, Arianna Huffington during the cocktail session inside the Spirit Awards tent.

"Thirteen" star Nikki Reed and Catherine Hardwicke, the film's director, post-red carpet in the main tent. Reed later took the Spirit for best debut performance.

"The Fog of War" director Errol Morris before the start of the ceremony. Mr. Morris won the prize for best documentary on Saturday and the Oscar yesterday. "I fear we are going down a rabbit hole once again," Morris said at the Oscars, "And if people can stop and think and reflect on some of the ideas in this movie, perhaps I have done some damn good here."

The "real-life" Harvey Pekar with his wife Joyce and their daughter Danielle inside the tent are in stitches with excitement with grins from ear to ear.

Our friends from the IFP Los Angeles Film Festival had a display outside the fest with monitor and a raffle. The prize was a presenter's gift bag (undoubtedly full of lots of goodies organized by On 3 Productions and worth $20K). Pictured from the left is LAFF head of programming Rachel Rosen, IFP/Los Angeles' Julianna Brannum, and LAFF programmer (and new father) Doug Jones.

"Chuck and Buck" star (and winner of a Spirit Award last year) Mike White outside the main tent. He later took to the stage to present a prize.
