iPOP at the 20th Independent Spirit Awards

iPOP at the 20th Independent Spirit Awards

by Brian Brooks/indieWIRE

iPOP traveled out to Los Angeles to attend the 20th annual Independent Spirit Awards. And what a nice day it was... The sun shined, and cocktails and schmoozing began promptly at 11:30 a.m. And of course, tons of celebs and friends were hanging out. What's not to like? Outside the main tent, the winners, including Catalina Sandino Moreno of "Maria Full of Grace" and "Sideways"'s Paul Giamatti modeled their Spirit statuettes.

IFP/Los Angeles chief Dawn Hudson enjoyed her big day at the Spirits, taking to the podium introducing the sponsors with a funny monologue. Hudson even paid iPOP a compliment later in the day saying, "You look like my ex-boyfriend" (we'll just assume that he's hot). She is pictured here earlier in the day with Los Angeles Times film critic, Kenneth Turan.

Jacob Vaughn, producer and Bryan Poyser, director of "Dear Pillow" hanging out at the Spirits having a grand old time. Poyser was nominated for the Someone to Watch award. The pair walked the aqua carpet outside the main tent.

ThinkFilm is having a great trip out in LA, going to the Spirits on Saturday, and then having their doc, "Born into Brothels" winning an Oscar on Sunday. Not a bad 48 hours. Pictured left to right are: Randy Manis, Amanda Sherwin, and Mark Urman.

Newmarket Films head Bob Berney escorted his wife Jeanne Berney down the aqua carpet in sunny Santa Monica. They later joined the "Tarnation" party held that night at a snazzy house in Hancock Park.

People dined on lunch inside the main tent before the live broadcast on IFC. They also walked around and schmoozed while having cocktails (cocktail period began at 11:30am - now that's a real party). Among those traversing the tent were Chris Munch with Someone to Watch award winner Jem Cohen.

The man in charge of wrangling the press and making sure we didn't break the rules (and there are rules my friends), mPRm chief Mark Pogachefsky walked around the tent with his cool straw hat. MPRm very kindly invited iPOP to be there, thanks all!

Eddie Schmidt and Kirby Dick, directors of "Twist of Faith" inside the main tent. The cocktail period before the show is quite a fun time, and it goes by fast.

Under the blazing California sun, shielding her eyes from the limelight political commentator Ariana Huffington (left) with producer Lawrence Bender, Newmmarket's Bob Berney, and rep Jeff Dowd. California was between storms, all was bright and celebratory for Spirits day.

How cool are Sarah Lash's sunglasses? Outside the main tent, Lash, from IFC Films chatted with Tracey Bing of Warner Independent Pictures.

The powerJohns shared a friendly chat as well outside before the show. Pictured here are Cinetic/Sloss Law's John Sloss with IFC's Jonathan Sehring. Besides broadcasting the show live, IFC also had a gift bag for Spirit attendees, but some completely uncool selfish materialist bourgeois pig stole iPOP's bag.

How perfect to have a group from the same company together just in time for a photo... Looking fab are Paramount Classics Ruth Vitale, Joe Matukewicz, Susan Wrubel and Robert Schulze.

Schmoozin' in the tent, Producer Midge Sanford, Peter Broderick, and IFP New York's Michelle Byrd take a time out for a pic.

iPOP loves "Control Room" director Jehane Noujaim, she's a load of laughs and fun to hang out with. She's pictured here with producer RJ Cutler who suggested she look away when she blinked in previous photo tries. Noujaim was nominated for the Truer Than Fiction award.

From "Napoleon Dynamite", producer Sean Covel, with star John Heder and producer Chris "Doc" Wyatt. Covel and Wyatt were nominated for the Producer's prize at the Spirit Awards, Jeeeez! Quite a few people commented how hot Heder looked.

Dennis O'Connor from HBO films, with Strand's Marcus Hu and Falco Ink's Shannon Treusch, debuting her pregnancy! No cocktails for Shannon...

Actress Jennifer Tilly looked nice and summery backstage at the Spirits enjoying a cocktail. Tilly presented during the ceremony.

Producers Award winner Gina Kwon was pretty casual considering she won $20,000, sitting backstage toward the end of the ceremony.

"Maria Full of Grace" star Catalina Sandino Moreno looked radiant backstage following her best actress win, and was very nice to come up to us and say "hello" (perfect opportunity to ask for a pic).

"Sideways" star Paul Giamatti received his well-deserved Spirit Award, giving a pose in the photo tent. IPOP didn't hang out too much in the photo tent this year, but we definitely had to get Giamatti's photo no matter what.

"Motorcycle Diaries" director Walter Salles and star Gael Garcia Bernal in mid-chat at the IFC party after the Spirits. IPOP scored a picture of the two together that was posed, but the camera had a smudge on its lens and the money shot was lost... DAMN!!!

Sundance Film Festival chief Geoff Gilmore gives a bright smile at the IFC party, which was held at the Shutters Hotel right smack on the beach in Santa Monica.
