Cameras flashing, a red carpet, and August humidity greeted guests at the New York premiere of Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini's "American Splendor," about the life of comic book author Harvey Pekar, on Tuesday night at the Chelsea West Theater. Crowds packed into the screening of the HBO Films/Fine Line feature, followed by a party at Eyebeam Studio on 21st and 11th Ave. where a "supper a la Cleveland" was served to partygoers. Cleveland-based Pekar's favorite dishes including White Castle hamburgers, macaroni and cheese, onion rings, chicken strips, chili, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were washed down by guests at the party with Orange Crush and an open bar. Pekar himself walked around answering questions from admirers and the press, as did actor Paul Giamatti who plays Pekar. Also working the crowd was the film's producer, Ted Hope, "American Splendor" co-directors Berman and Pulcini, as well as HBO Films execs Maud Nadler and Dennis O'Connor. Also enjoying the good eats and a cocktail or two were actors Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard and Sloss Law/Cinetic chief John Sloss with producer/wife Kathryn Tucker. And walking around snapping away with his own camera was Toby Radloff, who was also portrayed in the film.

Crayons were available for drawing and doodles on the paper table cloths during the evening. Someone apparently felt a burst of
creativity inspired by the film at this table, while another decided on a little Pop Art, courtesy of Heinz ketchup and French's mustard.
